A teenager from Odzi in Manicaland province was last week arrested for reportedly posting a jibe on Facebook alleging that President Robert Mugabe had died and was being preserved in a freezer.
Gumisai Manduwa (18) appeared before Mutare magistrate, Sekesai Chiwundura yesterday and was granted US$30 bail.
He was represented by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).
Manduwa was arrested last week and charged with contravening Section 33 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act for allegedly being discourteous to Mugabe by claiming that the ageing leader had died and his body was being kept in a freezer.
The teenager spent two nights in detention, initially at Odzi Police Station before being moved to Mutare Central Police station.
The ZLHR said there are currently more than 80 cases of a similar nature pending before the Constitutional Court and subsidiary courts countrywide.
